Canadian painter Carmelo Sortino was born on the beautiful island of Sicily in 1939, a time when food was hard to find and a piece of fruit was more precious than gold.
After coming to North America in the early 1970's, Sortino owned and operated a number of successful pastry shops and restaurants, slowly beginning to appreciate the strong relationship between food and art as his passion to paint moved him onto a new and exciting path. As in the case of many artists, his hobby eventually became a way of life.
Carmelo Sortino is well known for his larger than life depictions of fruits, painted with true italian passion they are not only large scale but rich, vibrant and luscious. As one of the northwest's up and coming artists his expressionist style is clearly redefining the still life genre. Carmelo's paintins hang in many corporate and private collections throughout the world.
